Pvt Slaymaker Ft Leavenworth Kansas

February 23, 1942 Tuesday

Dear Folk

Just a few lines to let you know that I’m still here and still here and don’t know when I’ll get moved. But don’t think tomorrow.

The bunk I got in the barracks is the one Lenard Davis had the kid in the next bunk told me.

I got split up from the rest of the boys but get to see them every once in a while don’t know if I’ll get stationed with any of them or not. If any it will be Leo Weichman.

I’m sure I’ll get in the Cavalry and my first job will be Barn Boss and the next will be a horse breaker.

We have plenty to eat and good bed. I wish they would hurry up and ship me out of here so I could get some mail.

Wish I could get out of here and up to Leavenworth and see a little of Kansas.

I been writing a lot, seems like, but not to no one but Betty and you. I’m going to mail this then go to bed. We have 11 General Rules of a Soldier to learn.

I’m getting along fine but don’t know what I’m going to do when I meet a officer. I was in retreat for the first time tonight.

Boys play a lot of cards and roll a lot of dice but the stakes are too big for me. By the way Uncle Elmer stuck 5 dollars in my pocket when we left. I got to shave and take a shower, so good by and don’t worry. I’ll be seeing you.

Lots of Love
